About Me, Charlee Brodsky

I am a photographer, educator, grandmother, mother, wife, dog-owner, and a few other things. My professional home is at Carnegie Mellon University where I am a professor of photography and have taught for over 40 years. The streets I walk are in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and it is in this fine city that I have made many photographs. I have photographed steel communities in the Ohio River Valley; and I have told stories of individuals such as my dear friend, Stephanie, who lived stoically with breast cancer, and of others who have dealt with challenges. The work on this site is different from my more world-oriented projects that take cues from the documentary tradition. Also, it departs from my artist books that have been inspired by muses ranging from my dogs to great thinkers such as Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Mary Shelley. I often work with writers and find great satisfaction in word/image pairings. I exhibit and publish my work, and it has been recognized by Pennsylvania state grants, an Emmy, and other awards.
